Popular Lagos young lawyer and activist, Inibehe Effiong has warned supporters of NBA President, Mr Paul Usoro SAN to desist from attacking lawyers whose opinion is not in support of the NBA President.
In a short statement seen by barristerNG.com, Mr Effiong lamented that Lawyers and indeed Senior Lawyers “are shamelessly condescending to the gutter level, all in the name of supporting the NBA President”
He warned that if this destructive tendency is not immediately arrested, the legal profession will suffer greatly.
Recall that in a novel move, the NBA President has been dragged to a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on fraud and corruption related charges.
Mr Usoro’s supporters, in an organised social media tirade, has attacked any lawyer with an opinion not in support of the NBA President, raising concerns that a new trend of unethical sycophancy may become a trend in a profession that has its pride in objectivity of its social standing.
Notable Lawyers including former Deputy Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof Ernest Ojukwu has been slammed with derogatory words from Usoro Supporters for sharing opinion not favorable to the NBA President.
Below is Mr Effiong’s statement;
If I were the President of the Bar, Mr Paul Usoro SAN, I will be deeply worried by the escalating proclivity of an intolerant mob of rabid sycophants and supporters who are ready to draw blood against dissenting voices in their egregious attempt to assuage and excite Mr. Paul Usoro SAN.
I have observed with utter dismay, how lawyers, including senior members of the Bar, are shamelessly condescending to the gutter level, all the name of supporting the NBA President.
If this destructive tendency is not immediately arrested, the legal profession will suffer greatly.
No NBA President will ever command the loyalty and support of all lawyers. That is what democracy entails.
This impulsive behaviour of castigating every person that speaks out in an unfavourable way against the NBA President will only galvanize more dissenters against his administration.
Mr Paul Usoro SAN is not an emperor and the Bar association is not a cult.
Those claiming to love our President more than the rest of us should be reminded that tyranny of the majority will never prevail in the legal profession. Nobody will be intimidated.
